| Urbanscapes in a
Temperate Rainforest: Ambient Narratives on Life and Abundance |
This CD is composed mostly of sounds gathered within a few hundred yards of my home in Durham, NC. All the recordings were done on Digital Audio Tape using very inexpensive homemade microphones constructed from Radio Shack microphone elements. The recordings were made as part of the research and experimentation for another project that, unfortunately, never materialized |
|
These recordings are meant
to be heard by you in any way you see fit. Let the volume control on
your system function like a
telescope so you might zoom with your ears
and hear this world
that surrounds us in different ways. Use
the same control to send
the sounds into deep background, a way
of bringing the acoustic
warmth of Summer indoors for the
Winter. |
| Both cityscapes are,
as the names imply, urban narratives. They contain all the industrial
sounds with which
we live as well as the sounds of birds, frogs, insects, squirrels and
other creatures that live among us in spite of our best efforts (mostly
unconscious) to eradicate them. In listening to these recordings, I
always come
away with the feeling that it is we who are the disrupters. Neither the
territorial calls of the most aggressive birds nor the barks of the
angriest
dogs, nor the roar of the loudest thunder irritates as much as the
single gun
shot or the ugly motorcycle or the insistent Sunday morning train.
Perhaps more
than anything, I just wanted to share the way I hear the world. Enjoy! |
